About Us
La Voz Latina is an independent student-run newspaper dedicated to covering both the Latino community on the University of Maryland, College Park campus and broader issues that affect Latinos nationwide. The newspaper, which was created in 1996 and born of a desperate need within the UMD Latino community to voice their concerns, has carried on through the years at the handiwork of impassioned students who believed in paper’s purpose. Our original sponsor Carolina Rojas-Bahr, who died tragically in the summer of 2007, was the anchor behind our efforts and left an indelible mark on the lives of those who labored on this publication over the years. This paper was instrumental in keeping students informed about the U.S. Latina/o studies movement leading to the approval of the first Latina/o history and culture-based minor at the University.
Anyone can write for us; most of our stories are written in English and you don’t have to be Latino to get involved. We’re looking for reporters, opinion writers, photographers, advertising representatives, graphic designers, and pretty much anyone else who has something to contribute.
