I started studying Spanish in seventh grade, but I didn’t take my study of the language seriously until sophomore year of high school. Around that time my best friend Cydney began thinking about study abroad in Chile. I remember reading emails from her and envying every one of her adventures.

Various authors have released books on Latino immigration, with the intention of better informing Americans about the Latino community and stories of their immigration to the United States.The books are marketed to children and try to tactfully address such a sensitive issue, especially one that is being brought up on the national level with talks of the DREAM act and immigration reform.

“Smuggle Truck”, which is scheduled for release next month for the iPod and iPad, entrusts players with the task of safely transporting undocumented immigrants across an unspecified border. As a player drives along bumpy desert terrain, he or she tries to hold on to passengers that bounce out of the bed of the truck in order to safely transport them across the border and win the game.

Latino drivers killed in accidents in the past decade drove without licenses according to a December New York Times story, which brings the efficacy of driver’s license laws into question.All but three states- New Mexico, Utah and Washington- passed laws denying driver’s licenses to people who could not prove legal residence in the United States.

Levels of undocumented immigration to the United States this past year have remained nearly the same from the previous year, according to data collected by the Pew Research Center.An estimated 11.2 unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States as of March 2010, up from 11.1 in 2009, the first slight reported increase since 2007.
